Description

Sweet and Sour Beef is a flavorful Chinese-inspired dish made with tender beef strips, bell peppers, and pineapple chunks, all tossed in a tangy, glossy sweet and sour sauce.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, coat the sliced beef with cornstarch and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook until browned and crispy. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell peppers for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender.
  4. Add pineapple chunks and stir for 1 minute.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, and soy sauce to make the sweet and sour sauce.
  6. Pour the sauce into the skillet and bring to a simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook for 2 more minutes until heated through.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice.

Notes

  • Slice beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
  • Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste for more sweetness or tang.
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy kick.
