A hearty and flavorful plant-based burger made with spicy chickpeas, vegetables, and spices, perfect for grilling or pan-frying.

- 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 red onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup grated carrot
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
- 2 tablespoons flour (or chickpea flour for gluten-free)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)
- 4 burger buns
- Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments for serving
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, mash chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.
- Add onion, garlic, carrot, herbs, spices, soy sauce, and lemon juice. Mix well.
- Stir in breadcrumbs and flour. Mix until a firm dough forms. Adjust consistency with more breadcrumbs or water if needed.
- Form mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
- Toast burger buns if desired. Assemble burgers with patties, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and condiments of choice.
- Serve hot and enjoy.
Notes
- Patties can be made ahead and refrigerated or frozen.
- For a spicier burger, add extra cayenne or chopped jalapeño.
- Great with vegan mayo, sriracha, or avocado as toppings.
- Grill patties using foil or a grill mat to prevent sticking.
