- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for buttercream)
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make caramel buttercream, beat softened butter with powdered sugar and 1/2 cup caramel sauce until smooth. Add heavy cream to adjust consistency.
- Assemble the cake by spreading buttercream between layers, then frost the outside of the cake.
- Drizzle remaining caramel sauce over the top and sprinkle with sea salt.
- Chill the cake for 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
