- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or brewed coffee
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream (for filling)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for filling)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
- Chocolate shavings or curls (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together sugars, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, then stir in hot water or coffee until fully combined. Batter will be thin.
- Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- To make the chocolate cream filling, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- Once cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a thick layer of chocolate cream over the top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides with remaining chocolate cream.
- Garnish with chocolate shavings or curls if desired. Chill before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use hot coffee instead of water to deepen the chocolate flavor.
- Chill the bowl and beaters before whipping cream for best results.
- The cake layers can be baked a day in advance and stored wrapped at room temperature.
- Refrigerate the assembled cake for at least 1 hour before serving for cleaner slices.
