Description

Maple Glazed Long Johns are classic yeast-raised doughnuts shaped into bars and topped with a rich maple glaze. These bakery-style doughnuts are soft, fluffy, and full of maple flavor, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 heaping tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Warm the milk until just warm to the touch.
  3. In a large bowl, combine yeast mixture, milk, butter, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, and egg. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add flour, mixing until a slightly sticky dough forms.
  5. Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll out on a floured surface into a 12×8 inch rectangle.
  7. Cut into 3×1 inch rectangles. Place on greased baking sheets, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry doughnuts in batches until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
  10. Whisk together powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and maple extract to make the glaze.
  11. Dip tops of warm doughnuts into the glaze and place on a wire rack to set.

Notes

  • Use a thermometer to ensure oil is at the correct temperature.
  • Fill with cream or custard for variety.
  • Top with bacon bits for a sweet and savory twist.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
