- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

- 3 cups powdered sugar

Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Warm the milk until just warm to the touch.
- In a large bowl, combine yeast mixture, milk, butter, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, and egg. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a slightly sticky dough forms.
- Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll out on a floured surface into a 12×8 inch rectangle.
- Cut into 3×1 inch rectangles. Place on greased baking sheets, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry doughnuts in batches until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
- Whisk together powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and maple extract to make the glaze.
- Dip tops of warm doughnuts into the glaze and place on a wire rack to set.
