Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks, cut in half
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 cup crushed cheddar cheese chips (like Cheetos or Cheez-Its)
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the coating: In one bowl, place flour. In a second bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. In a third bowl, mix crushed cheddar chips, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper.
- Coat the cheese sticks:
- Dredge each mozzarella stick in flour, shaking off excess.
- Dip into the egg mixture, then coat in the cheddar breadcrumb mix.
- Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating for a thicker crust.
- Freeze: Place coated cheese sticks on a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes (prevents cheese from melting too fast when frying).
- Heat the oil: In a deep pan, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the sticks: Fry in batches for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot: Enjoy with marinara sauce, ranch, or spicy mayo!
Notes
- Freezing is key! It helps prevent cheese from leaking out.
- Use air fryer instead—spray with oil and air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes.
- Swap cheddar chips with Doritos or Parmesan for a different flavor twist.
