Description

Homemade ginger ale is a naturally fizzy, refreshing beverage made with fresh ginger, citrus juice, and a sweetener of your choice. It’s a healthier, more flavorful alternative to store-bought sodas and perfect for sipping or mixing.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup fresh ginger root, peeled and grated or chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar or honey
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon or lime juice
  • Chilled sparkling water or club soda (for serving)
  • Ice cubes (for serving)
  • Lemon or lime slices (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Peel and finely grate or chop the fresh ginger.
  2. In a saucepan, combine ginger, sugar (or honey), and water.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let steep for 15–30 minutes for a stronger flavor.
  5. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve and let cool to room temperature.
  6. To serve, fill a glass with ice and add 2–3 tablespoons of ginger syrup.
  7. Add a splash of lemon or lime juice.
  8. Top with chilled sparkling water or club soda and stir gently.
  9. Garnish with citrus slices if desired.

Notes

  • Use honey or maple syrup for a more natural sweetener.
  • Add herbs like mint or basil during simmering for added freshness.
  • Spices like cinnamon or cloves can be added for a spiced version.
  • Adjust the syrup quantity to taste for more or less sweetness.
  • Store syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
