Description

Fried Okra is a classic Southern dish made by coating sliced okra in a seasoned cornmeal mixture and frying until golden and crispy.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Place sliced okra in a bowl and pour buttermilk over it. Let it soak for 10 minutes.
  2. In another bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Dredge the soaked okra in the cornmeal mixture, coating well.
  5. Fry the okra in batches, without overcrowding, for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot as a snack or side dish.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, double-dip okra in buttermilk and coating.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature for even frying.
  • Frozen okra can be used but should be thawed and patted dry first.
  • Pairs well with ranch dressing or spicy dipping sauces.
