Description
Classic French Toast with Syrup and Butter is a warm, comforting breakfast made from slices of bread soaked in a rich egg custard, pan-fried until golden, and served with melted butter and sweet maple syrup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of thick bread (brioche or challah preferred)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp butter (for frying)
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Butter, for topping
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar (if using), and salt.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on each side.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.
- Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Transfer cooked French toast to a plate. Top with a pat of butter and drizzle with maple syrup.
- Serve warm with optional fruit or powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for better absorption and texture.
- Double the custard mix if using more than 4 slices of bread.
- Add a splash of orange zest or nutmeg for extra flavor.
