Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Texas Toast:

  • 8 slices Texas toast (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Beef Mixture

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  • Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.

Step 2: Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce

  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

Step 3: Prepare the Texas Toast

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Butter both sides of each slice of Texas toast and place them on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 5 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden and crispy.

Step 4: Assemble and Melt

  • Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
  • Return to the oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 5: Serve

  • Serve hot, paired with your favorite sides like a fresh salad, pickles, or chips.

Notes

  • Cheese Options: Substitute cheddar with mozzarella, pepper jack, or a mix for added flavor.
  • Vegetarian Version: Use plant-based ground meat or lentils as a substitute for beef.
  • Make-Ahead: Prepare the Sloppy Joe mixture ahead of time and reheat before assembling.
