Description

The Classic Sloppy Joe Melt with Cheesy Bread is a comforting, flavorful sandwich that combines savory ground beef in a tangy tomato sauce, topped with melted cheese and served on crispy, cheesy toasted bread. This hearty melt is perfect for a satisfying lunch or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices bread (preferably sturdy white or sourdough)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
  • Butter for spreading

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until vegetables soften.
  3. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
  4. Meanwhile, butter one side of each bread slice. Place buttered side down on a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Top the unbuttered side with a generous layer of shredded or sliced cheddar cheese. Allow the cheese to melt slightly.
  6. Spoon a portion of the Sloppy Joe mixture over the cheese-topped bread slices, then add another slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up, to create a sandwich.
  7. Grill each sandwich until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese inside is fully melted. Flip carefully to brown both sides evenly.
  8. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add hot sauce or chopped jalapeños to the beef mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Try different cheeses like mozzarella or pepper jack for varied flavor.
  • Add sliced pickles or coleslaw inside the sandwich for extra crunch and tang.
  • Store leftovers wrapped tightly in the fridge for up to 2 days; reheat in skillet or oven.
  • Use sturdy bread like sourdough or thick white bread to prevent sogginess.
