Scale
- 5 cups day-old bread, cubed (preferably brioche or challah)
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks
- 1/2 cup mixed dried fruits (e.g., raisins, cranberries, chopped apricots)
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch baking dish with butter.
- Spread cubed bread in the baking dish. Sprinkle chocolate chips and dried fruits evenly over the top.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together milk, cream, eggs, sugars, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down lightly to soak all the pieces.
- Let sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still soft.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm on its own or with whipped cream or ice cream.
Notes
- Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best texture.
- Customize with your favorite dried fruits or chocolate types.
- Soaking time helps the custard absorb evenly — don’t skip it.
- Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
