Description

Caramelized Mushroom Puff Pastry Tarts are savory, flaky pastries topped with golden sautéed mushrooms and herbs. These elegant tarts are perfect for appetizers, brunch, or a vegetarian main dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 package puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or rosemary, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan or Gruyère cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out puff pastry and cut into 6 squares or circles. Score a 1/2-inch border on each without cutting through.
  3. Place pastry on baking sheet and refrigerate while preparing filling.
  4. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms and sauté until golden and moisture has evaporated.
  5. Add garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  6. Spoon mushroom mixture into the center of each pastry square, keeping within the scored border.
  7. Brush edges with beaten egg.
  8. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until pastry is puffed and golden.
  9. Top with cheese and additional herbs if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Add caramelized onions for extra flavor.
  • Top with blue cheese or goat cheese for variation.
  • Use mixed mushrooms for complex flavor.
  • Make mini versions for appetizers.
  • Ensure mushrooms are cooked dry to prevent soggy pastry.
