Description

Caramelized dumplings are tender, golden-browned dough balls simmered in rich caramel syrup and topped with fresh berries, offering a delightful mix of soft and crisp textures.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup blackberries or other fresh berries
  • Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in milk gradually to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  4. Shape dough into small dumplings using your hands or a spoon.
  5. In a deep skillet or saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, and granulated sugar over medium heat. Stir until dissolved.
  6. Add dumplings to the syrup. Cover and cook for about 10–12 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even caramelization.
  7. Uncover and let simmer until the syrup thickens and the dumplings are golden brown on the outside.
  8. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  9. Top with blackberries and a drizzle of the remaining syrup. Garnish with mint if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of water to loosen the syrup.
  • Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Plant-based butter and milk make it vegan-friendly.
  • Frozen berries can be used—thaw and drain before serving.
