- 1 tablespoon lemon juice

- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour or cornstarch
- For the topping:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour or cornstarch. Transfer to the prepared dish.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in milk and vanilla extract to form a thick batter.
- Drop spoonfuls of topping over the apples, leaving some gaps for steam to escape.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream.
