Description

Apple cobbler is a cozy, rustic dessert featuring spiced apples baked under a golden, biscuit-like topping. Simple to make and full of comforting flavor, it’s perfect served warm with ice cream.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the apple filling:
  • 67 apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour or cornstarch
  • For the topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour or cornstarch. Transfer to the prepared dish.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  4. Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in milk and vanilla extract to form a thick batter.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of topping over the apples, leaving some gaps for steam to escape.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream.

Notes

  • Add raisins, cranberries, or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
  • Substitute apples with seasonal fruits like peaches or berries.
  • Top with oats and brown sugar for a crisp-style topping.
  • Freeze after baking for up to 2 months; reheat before serving.
  • Make individual cobblers in ramekins and reduce bake time accordingly.
